Stop Choosing Shampoo Based on Hair Length (Do This Instead)
Share
Choose shampoo based on how quickly your hair gets oily and flat, not its length, texture, or curl pattern. Fine hair needs washing every 1 to 2 days and gets completely flat when dirty, medium hair lasts 3 to 4 days and keeps some volume, and coarse hair can go 5 to 14 days between washes because it produces less oil naturally.
At Dory's Designs Beauty Studio, about seventy-five percent of new clients have been using the wrong shampoo for their hair type, usually based on texture or curl pattern instead of oil production. After twenty years doing hair in Etobicoke and working with over eighteen hundred clients, I can tell you the single biggest hair care mistake is choosing shampoo based on hair length or texture instead of how fast your scalp produces oil.
My name is Dory, and I developed this oil-production classification system around 2010 after noticing that clients with identical hair texture (all had fine, straight hair) needed completely different washing schedules. Some washed daily, others every four days. The traditional fine, medium, coarse texture categories weren't helping anyone choose products.
After tracking wash schedules across five hundred clients, I realized oil production was the actual determining factor, not texture, length, or curl pattern. This realization changed how I recommend products at Dory's Designs. Now about ninety percent of clients who switch to oil-production-based shampoo selection say their hair looks better and lasts longer between washes.
Why Hair Length and Texture Don't Matter for Shampoo
Your hair length doesn't change what your scalp needs. Think about it like nutrition. Your height doesn't change whether you need protein, vitamins, and healthy fats. Everyone needs those basics. But some people thrive on high-carb diets while others do better on low-carb. That's the part that varies.
Same with hair. Every scalp needs to be cleaned. But how often you need to wash and which products work best depends entirely on how your scalp produces oil, not whether your hair is long, short, straight, or wavy.
I see this confusion constantly at Dory's Designs Beauty Studio. Clients come in asking for the best shampoo for shoulder-length hair or the perfect product for wavy hair. Those aren't the right questions. The right question is: how does your hair behave between washes?
At our hairstyling consultations, we start by figuring out your actual hair type based on oil production and volume retention. That's what determines everything else.
What Are the Three Actual Hair Types?
Forget fine, medium, and coarse as texture descriptions. I'm using those terms differently. Your hair type is about oil production and how long you can go between washes.
At Dory's Designs Beauty Studio, about forty-five percent of clients have medium hair, thirty-five percent have fine hair, and twenty percent have coarse hair.
Fine hair gets oily and flat fast. If you can't make it past two days without your hair looking like you just got out of a pool, completely stuck to your head and greasy, you have fine hair. This type loses volume quickly and feels weighed down by oil.
Medium hair can go three to four days between washes comfortably. On day two, your hair still has some volume and body. It's not stuck to your head. It might not look freshly washed, but it still has lift and movement.
Coarse hair can go the longest between washes, anywhere from five days to two full weeks. Your scalp produces less oil naturally, so your hair stays relatively clean-looking and dry in a good way.
How Do You Figure Out Your Hair Type?
I have two simple tests you can do at home to nail down your type.
Test 1: Fine versus Medium
Wait until day two after washing. Don't add any dry shampoo or products. Just look at your hair in the mirror.
If it's completely flat to your head with zero volume and looks oily, you have fine hair. If it still has some body, lift, and movement even though it's not freshly washed, you have medium hair.
Test 2: Medium versus Coarse
On day four after washing, apply a small amount of dry shampoo. How does your hair feel after?
If it still feels like it really needs to be washed and you're pushing it hard to make it one more day, you have medium hair. If the dry shampoo makes it feel fresh and clean again like you could easily go several more days, you have coarse hair.
These tests have helped hundreds of my clients at Dory's Designs finally understand why products that work for their friends don't work for them. Different hair types need completely different approaches.
What Should Fine Hair Use?
Fine hair's biggest enemy is oil buildup. You need products that deep-clean without weighing hair down.
I recommend a two-wash process for fine hair. Yes, two separate shampoos in one shower.
First wash: Use a clarifying shampoo like Keratin Complex Clarifying Shampoo. Use about half the amount you'd normally use for a full wash. This pre-cleanses and soaks up excess oil.
Second wash (if you blow-dry): Use KMS Head Remedy Deep Cleanse Shampoo. This is a strong cleanser that removes every trace of oil and is incredibly lightweight. It won't weigh your hair down and gives serious volume.
Second wash (if you air-dry): Use Revive PREP - Shampoo. This is a gentler cleanser that intentionally leaves a tiny bit of oil in your hair. That small amount of oil creates better texture for air-drying and prevents that straw-like feeling.
The key difference is understanding your styling method. Blow-drying works best with completely oil-free hair. Air-drying needs a touch of natural oil for texture and movement.
What Works for Medium Hair?
Medium hair has almost identical needs to fine hair. It just needs more product.
Use the exact same products: Redken Cleansing Cream for your first wash, then either Redken Volume Injection for blow-drying or Pulp Riot's Boston and Singapore for air-drying.
The difference is in application. Fine hair should keep conditioner mostly on the ends. Medium hair can apply conditioner higher up the hair shaft because it won't get as weighed down.
At Dory's Designs Beauty Studio, medium hair is the most common type I see. It's also the easiest to maintain once you figure out the right products and washing schedule.
What Does Coarse Hair Need?
Coarse hair goes so long between washes that oil and product buildup become significant by the time you finally wash. That's why a two-wash system is essential.
First wash: KMS Head Remedy Deep Cleanse Shampoo to remove all that accumulated oil and buildup efficiently. This saves your specialized shampoo for the second wash when your hair is already mostly clean.
Second wash: Moroccan Oil Moisture Repair. This is hands down the best product for coarse hair because it's both deeply hydrating and extremely cleansing. Coarse hair loves moisture, and this delivers it without leaving residue.
The biggest mistake people with coarse hair make is washing too often out of habit. If your hair doesn't feel dirty, don't wash it.
Why the Two-Wash System Works
Using two different shampoos in one session sounds excessive, but it's the most effective way to thoroughly clean your hair without damaging it.
The clarifying shampoo removes oil and buildup. The specialized shampoo addresses your hair's specific needs (volume, moisture, texture). Together, they give you a completely clean scalp and healthy, manageable hair.
Think of it like washing dishes. You rinse off the big chunks first, then use soap for the actual cleaning. Same principle.
What's the Complete Client Success Story?
My client Carmen came to Dory's Designs Beauty Studio frustrated because she'd been buying "shampoo for fine hair" based on her hair texture, but it made her hair look even greasier. "I wash every single day and by dinner time my hair looks awful," she said.
When I did the day-two test with her, her hair still had volume and movement. She had medium hair, not fine. I switched her to the two-wash system with Redken Cleansing Cream and Volume Injection.
Three weeks later, she texted me: "I'm washing every three days now and my hair has never looked better. I can't believe I was using the wrong products for ten years!" She saved money on shampoo and gained two extra days between washes. Most clients at Dory's Designs who switch extend time between washes by one to two days.
Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing the Right Shampoo for Your Hair
Does hard water affect which shampoo I should use?
Hard water can cause mineral buildup, making clarifying shampoo even more important regardless of your hair type. If you notice dullness or your hair feels coated, use clarifying shampoo weekly in addition to your regular routine. About sixty percent of my clients in Etobicoke deal with hard water issues.
Can I use the same shampoo year-round?
Dry winters might require switching to slightly more moisturizing formulas, while warmer months might need stronger cleansing products. Your hair type stays the same, but seasonal adjustments help. About seventy percent of my clients make small seasonal tweaks to their routine.
How do I know if my shampoo is working?
If your hair stays clean, voluminous, and manageable for the expected number of days for your hair type (2 days for fine, 3 to 4 for medium, 5 plus for coarse), your shampoo is working perfectly. Most clients know within two weeks if they've found the right products.
Should I buy salon shampoo or drugstore brands?
At Dory's Designs Beauty Studio, quality matters more than price, but professional products are formulated differently than drugstore options. We can recommend specific products during your appointment that work with your hair type and local water conditions. About eighty-five percent of clients who switch to salon products see noticeable improvement.
How much does a hair care consultation cost at Dory's Designs?
At Dory's Designs Beauty Studio in Etobicoke, hair care consultations are $65 and include hair type assessment, the two at-home tests, personalized product recommendations with specific brands, and application demonstrations for the two-wash system. Most clients save money long-term by buying the right products the first time.
